The Display Network has its own terms or lingo. The following will introduce you to the terminology that is specific to the Display Network software:
Terminology related to content
Presentation
A Presentation contains the specific mix of multimedia, data and branding content that is shown on your displays. It is used to create the overall look of the content that is displayed on your digital displays. A Presentation is really two things – a way to “skin” your content and a way to integrate and control the layout of multiple content items of various types into a single, comprehensive visual presentation that is dynamic, highly engaging, and informative for its viewers. The Presentation is played on the displays you select and according to the schedule you define.
Presentation Template
A pre-designed Presentation template that you would create your presentations from. The software provides a number of Presentation templates in a variety of display resolutions that you can download and personalize to meet your information and display needs.
Placeholder
Placeholders are containers, or specific areas, within a Presentation that are used for the display of custom-designed play lists, that a user wants to display. The characteristics of a Placeholder for video displays are slightly different than Placeholders for ticker displays.
Play List
A Play List is a container, or list, that allows you to assemble any number of digital content elements, or Play List Items, in a specific sequence and play them according to a schedule defined by you.
Play Lists can be named, saved, and assigned to one or more Placeholders for display in the Placeholder area of a Presentation. Play Lists are a great way to control and display custom content – you can build as many different Play Lists as you want – create them for different departments within your organization, for different product or service promotions, seasons, or for different time periods.
Client Controlled Play List
A Client Controlled Play List is a specific type of Play List that is created by a Network Operator for use by its clients. Once created, the Network Operator’s clients add their own custom Play List Items to the Client Controlled Play List.
Play List Item
A Play List Item is the digital content element that is added to a Play List. In the Display Network a Play List Item can be any of the following – Bulletins, webpages, digital media files (images, videos, Flash animations), live data (financial quotes, news headlines, RSS feeds, sports scores, weather), or TV.
Bulletin
A Bulletin is a type of Play List Item that is unique to the Display Network software. It is created by a Content Administrator or Content Editor within the Display Network software and is typically used to display timely, relevant announcements or promotional information. A Bulletin can contain text, images, and/or a table.
Media Library
The Media Library is an online library within the Display Network software to which you can upload the digital media files you want to display as part of your Presentation as a Play List Item within a Play List.
Review Status
Review Status refers to the current status of a Play List or Bulletin. The status of a Play List or Bulletin is either Draft (incomplete, viewable and editable by a Content Administrator or assigned Content Editor), Ready (complete, non-editable by any user, but viewable by a Content Administrator or assigned Content Approver), Approved (non-editable and ready to be shown on a display), Rejected (not ready to be shown on a display as determined by a Content Administrator or assigned Content Approver).
Terminology related to display hardware
Appliance
An Appliance is the dedicated computer (the hardware) that is connected to the actual display device (e.g., LCD screen, LED ticker display) and that provides a video output for one or more displays. It interfaces with the web-based Display Network application to show the content on the display.
Appliance Locator Code/Appliance ID
The Appliance Locator code is a unique 5 character code that is automatically assigned to a computer, or “Appliance”, when Rise Player is installed on it. The format of the Appliance Locator is “ABCD-F”. The dash shown between the fourth and fifth characters is part of the Appliance Locator code and must be included when the code is entered in the Appliance Locator field upon registration of the appliance. The Appliance Locator code is required to register an appliance on the Display Network.
Display
Display refers to the actual display device (e.g., LCD screen, LED ticker display) on which the Presentation content is shown. A Display must be connected to an Appliance for it to show content.
RDNA Service
The service that runs on the Appliance to start Rise Player, Rise Data Collector, Rise Data Provider and authenticates to the Rise Display Network servers. This service appears in the Windows Services console on the Appliance.
Rise Player
An application installed on the Appliance by the RDNA service. When installed it also installs the Rise Data Collector and Rise Data Provider applications. The three applications work in conjunction with each other to show the Presentation on the digital display.
